Go HFC free

Your message Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to voice my concern at the continued use of powerful global warming gases, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in your supermarket refrigeration. I was shocked to learn that almost one third of the carbon footprint of supermarkets comes from the use of refrigerant gases, despite the fact that there are climate-friendly alternatives available. Your company did not fare well in the recent EIA Chilling Facts survey, with less than 34 out of 100 points. In particular the survey showed that your supermarket has set no date by when you will stop using HFCs, despite the fact that these are super greenhouse gases which are thousands of times more powerful at warming the climate than CO2. As a major UK retailer, you should be leading the way in finding climate-friendly solutions to the daily running of your business. I urge you to immediately commit to HFC-free refrigeration systems in all new supermarket buildings and retrofits, and to further commit to phasing out the use of HFCs in all stores, distribution centres and transport by 2015.
